Hundreds of thousands of airport passengers rushed in and out of check-in lines, security checkpoints and onto trams to hop on their planes while, in the background, Orlando International Airport slowly is working on a way to welcome even more passengers every day.

On Nov. 2, the airport gave the media a behind-the-scenes look at its $1.1 billion-plus expansion work that plays a key role in its ability to keep up with the 37 million passengers it welcomes each year and how it plans to welcome even more domestic and international passengers in the years to come.

The airport's expansion plan will have a larger impact on the $60 billion tourism and travel industry. More passenger capacity allows for more travel to the region. Orlando already welcomed 62 million visitors last year, and experts have said that figure is expected to climb again this year.

Construction at the airport is concentrated in three spots, with one just completed and ready to open this week.

One of the two still under construction includes the new south terminal automated people mover system, which is slated to be completed by next summer and bring a new passenger transportation option to the airport. That will connect to the much-larger intermodal terminal facility— the second project under construction, which includes a regional rail hub, parking garage, energy plant, and roads and bridges to accommodate passenger travel. The intermodal terminal is expected to be complete by summer 2017.

Meanwhile, set to open sometime this week is the new north cellphone lot with upgraded amenities such as Wi-Fi, outdoor seating, a pet walking area and a built-in TV flight information board. That expansion is expected to help improve customer experience at the airport.
