Appeals Court Maintains Injunction On Obama's Immigration Actions

In a blow to President Barack Obama, a federal appeals court upheld an injunction against the president's controversial executive actions on immigration.

A three-judge panel from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans issued the 2 to 1 ruling Tuesday afternoon.
The injunction was originally granted by U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen on February 16th at the request of Texas and 25 other states that oppose Obama's immigration actions.
The two judges in the majority found that Obama likely exceeded his authority with the executive order and argued that leaving the injunction in place is in the public interest.
The decision to maintain the injunction did not come as much of a surprise, as it was previously revealed the panel would include a majority of Republican-appointed judges.
Judge Stephen A. Higginson, who was appointed by Obama, issued a dissenting opinion, arguing that the dispute was political and should be left up to the White House and Congress.
The latest ruling continues to prevent the Obama administration from implementing the new immigration policies, although a separate group is likely to make the final decision on the legality of the president's actions.
Announced last November, Obama's executive actions on immigration are expected to shield up to 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Obama has claimed the move was necessary due to inaction by Congress, while Republicans argue the president's actions are unconstitutional.
